New Hope for Chlamydia Vaccine

Monday February 6, 2006

Research that began 25 years ago is now showing new promise in the search for a vaccine against Chlamydia trachomatis, as reported in Reuters. Chlamydia trachomatis is thought to be the most common sexually transmitted bacterial infection in the U.S., and is also one of the world’s leading causes of blindness.

A study released last week reported on test tube experiments that found antibodies that may prevent infection by all strains of Chlamydia trachomatis. One of the researchers suggested that clinical trials on humans could be around five years away.

The original research, which began in 1975, hit a dead end due to a lack of technology to do the research required. Recent advances in research technology and DNA knowledge allowed the researcher to resume their work.
