Sharon Stone on Oral Sex

Wednesday March 29, 2006

Sharon Stone has reportedly been speaking her mind about oral sex, and particularly oral sex and teens. The actress, who according an item in Contact Music UK, also spends her time "as an activist raising AIDS awareness" tells teens that engaging in oral sex to avoid the dangers of unprotected penetrative sex is a good idea. The article quotes Stone as saying:

"Young people talk to me about what to do if they're being pressed for sex? I tell them (what I believe): oral sex is a hundred times safer than vaginal or anal sex. If you're in a situation where you cannot get out of sex, offer a blow job."

There are so many ways to respond to this quote. On the one hand, her frank discussion of sex with teens is refreshing. On the other hand, I'm worried she may be unaware of the many STDs that can be transmitted via oral sex.

But most interesting is her last comment about those times "where you cannot get out of sex".

When I read this I thought of teens I've talked to while doing sex education who have had sex when they really didn't want to.

Most people I talk to are choosing to have sex and doing it (more or less) when they want. But for a lot of people early sex experiences, while something short of forced sex, have elements of coercion. I think this is a complicated, but very interesting discussion that few people have in public. And if it's Sharon Stone who brings it to our attention, more power to her.

Of course all this is likely another sad publicity stunt to get more coverage of Stone prior to the release of Basic Instinct 2. But at least it's a sad publicity stunt with an interesting twist.

Well I have to admit that this is quite a smart solution of this hard question “what to do if they’re being pressed for sex? ”
