Vatican May OK Condom Use for People Living with HIV/AIDS
According to a report from BBC News yesterday the Pope has asked the Vatican's council for health care to prepare a document considering the issue of condom use for people living with "grave diseases" starting with AIDS. There is no date set for the document to be released and no formal statement from the Vatican.
But the report sites a retired archbishop Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini who last week made a public statement supporting the use of condoms in married couples where one partner is HIV positive.
It's unlikely to be a slippery slope to supporting condom use and education in the general population, and I'm not sure what position the Vatican will take on people who aren't married using condoms (well, those people aren't supposed to be having sex, so I guess condoms don't apply), but it still seems like something worth being excited about.
