Sex Toy Travel Advisory

Friday August 18, 2006

BoingBoing points us to a site that is offering some advice on travelling safely (and without hassle) with your sex toys. Violet Blue at Tiny Nibbles has been writing about travelling with sex toys for a few years, offering stories from fellow travellers and her own perspective on how to avoid embarrassment at the border.

Most of the advice is to always put your sex toys in checked baggage. With the recent increase in airport security this now seems like a requirement and not an option. But in my experience, putting sex toys in carry on can be less annoying. If you can deal with looking security in the eye and explaining that that thing in their hand is a sex toy, it's much better than packing it (not the fun kind of packing it, the one where your bag goes out of your site).

I have travelled from Canada to the U.S., Mexico, and the UK, dozens of times with sex toys for workshops and I know lots of other sex educators who have done the same, and none of us (we're a mix of genders, colours, ages, and tattoedness) have ever had trouble from security. They tend to either be embarrassed or interested. On the other hand I've heard several stories of people's sex toys going missing from checked baggage, and obviously there are the well known cases of people being pulled off a plane for something in their luggage.

On the other hand it may be that when they know it's my work (and they know that my work doesn't involve having sex with people) their attitude changes and they relax. Most of the time they simply ask me where they can buy the stuff.
