In honor of the opening of John Cameron Mitchell's Short Bus, the Independent Film Channel offers a crash course in the history of unsimulated sex in film.

The tone is a bit annoying, as if the writer elevates herself by constantly reminding us that sex is a bore, but it was nice to see most of the films that have included real sex acknowledged (besides, any excuse to talk about Maruschka Detmers is a good one).

I noticed several films were left out, including Carlos Reygadas' Battle in Heaven and Lars von Trier’s Idiots both of which apparently had real sex (although I saw Idiots, and can't remember any unsimulated sex, but I might have been too uncomfortable to be looking closely enough.
