CDC to Make HPV Vaccine Available for Free to Children
Merck, the maker of the HPV vaccine Gardasil, announced yesterday that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have added the vaccine to their Vaccines for Children program which makes vaccines available for free to children, under the age of 18, who cannot afford it.
Gardasil was approved by the CDC in July. According to Merck the vaccine protects against four strains of HPV which account for 70% of cervical cancer cases. It also protects against vaginal and vulvar cancers, two other gynecological cancers that are linked to HPV.
