Major Adult Retailer Promises to Phase Out Potentially Toxic Sex Toys

Wednesday January 10, 2007

Violet Blue just posted an exciting note about an email she received from someone at Adam & Eve, who writes that the company, which runs the largest adult mail order business in the U.S., is planning on eliminating phthalates from all their manufactured products and eventually from their entire catalogue.

This is huge news, as Adam & Eve (and their parent company PHE) carry considerably more weight in the industry than the smaller sex shops that have long complained about phthalates in sex toys, and could be a catalyst for the major manufacturers to turn away from phthalates as well. In addition to their vast mail order empire Adam & Eve has been aggressively trying to expand their franchise operations.

Of course the best laid plans don't always end well, and we'll have to wait and see if these good wishes come to fruition. The number of times I've read "latex free" and "ethically manufactured" on packaging and marketing material from companies where neither claim were even remotely true, is staggering.

We'll have to wait and see. And we'll have to hope that Greenpeace makes this a priority in the U.S. as they have in Europe, so there can be at least some oversight.

(1) Adam says:

This is a great step in the right direction. There is no reason why any dangerous materials or chemicals need to be used in the making of sextoys. I can’t believe its taken this long to get the point across to the manufacturers. Something that goes inside you, or that you put yourselve into should be made from clean, healthy and safe materials!
