Reconsidering Reel Sex

Anticipating the March DVD release of John Cameron Mitchell's Shortbus I've been thinking about real sex on film recently. Given how much pornography there is, and how easy it is to access it, I’m honestly puzzled by why the media and moviegoers seem so fascinated with real sex that happens in mainstream movies.

It's hard to know what we're so interested in.

• Do we think that actors in mainstream movies will be hotter having sex?
• Is it the taboo element that they're not "supposed" to be having real sex in those kinds of movies that excites us?
• Do we imagine they'll be more passion or chemistry than in your average adult movie?
• Or do we just want to see celebrities having sex?

I wonder how many people could tell the difference between real and simulated sex if each scene was shot in order to obscure any proof one way or the other? Some people consider real porn to be the act of capturing unscripted sex on film, as if in a documentary. But when you see regular people having sex it’s often a little bit boring. And sex (real or simulated) in mainstream movies and in adult films is far from unscripted. People are often surprised by the extent to which sex in porn is produced.

But never mind all of these questions. If you’re interested in judging for yourself, or you just like your real sex on film with better lighting than in your average adult feature, check out this list of mainstream movies that contain real sex scenes. There’s no section on IMDB that confirms whether the sex scenes in a movie are real or simulated, but I made sure to verify the rumors about each of these films at least twice. Of course most of that verification was on line, so you need to judge for yourself.
