Sex and drugs...the not so hidden connection
Last month the Centers for Disease Control released their latest survey data about drug use and sexual behavior among American adults. Unfortunately they didn't seem to ask a lot of questions about sex and drugs together. Even before most of us experiment with either sex or drugs, these two things are indelibly linked in our brains, as they often top the list of things we're warned about. Don't have sex, don't do drugs, don't take candy from strangers. Some of this advice is great. Much of it we don't follow. Probably in part because all the warnings in the world can't substitute for honest information we can use to help us make smart decisions on our own (or at least make bad decisions with the knowledge that they're bad).
This favoring of fear over fact doesn't just end when we talk to our kids. It took researchers years to turn their attention to the sexual effects of over-the-counter and prescription drugs, and there is still much we don't know about the immediate and long term effects of other drugs on our sexual behaviors and overall sexuality.
As an antidote to the sex and drug education most of us got as children, I thought it would be worth taking a grown up look at what research can tell us about the impact of drugs on our sex lives, and vice versa.
