What do Tom Ford, Carl's Jr., Japanese Cartoons, and Vaginas Have in Common?
Would it surprise you if the answer was: BoingBoingTV?
Like millions of other casual and loyal readers of the wonderblog BoingBoing I was eager to see what would happen when they took their time tested format and translated it into video. Having worked in television production for the past ten years I've seen promise after promise of great internet TV be dashed by companies who ignore the difference in how we as users interact with text versus visual content. So I was a bit nervous about the "same old BoingBoing but with Talkies" offer (the ease of navigating through text and not having to wait for a punch line I'm not interested in is one of the things that is so appealing about BoingBoing in the first place).
But after watching the most recent segment, hosted by Xeni Jardin, I'm encouraged and even a bit excited.
Here Xeni manages to combine well known and obscure internet ephemera (burgers meet Japanese cartoons meet bizarre German cologne company) and offers it up with a little bit of her own personality which we get to experience in a way different from her text based entries. All this in under three and a half minutes.
And if the promise of all this isn't enough to get you to click through, I'm sure the image of Xeni's smiling face beside Tom Ford's new perfume ad will.
