Looking for Sexual Help

Wednesday November 7, 2007

Where do you turn when you have a sex question and want a real live person to answer it? While writing for this website I often find myself typing the suggestion “talk to your doctor or visit a local sexual health clinic”. Only recently did a reader point out that no where do I bother to explain how to go about finding these sex positive doctors and clinics just waiting to alleviate our sexual anxieties.

Unfortunately there are still lots of places in this country where access to sex positive or even sexually informed health care is limited. But at least now, with many thanks to one frustrated reader, you have a place to start.

How do I know if I am ready for sex or not? I’ve looked up a bunch of sites that help but so far none have helped me decide if I am emotinal ready for sex. Can you help?

Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for your comment and question. It’s one of those that’s so difficult to talk about in general terms but so important for all of us individually. It’s great that you’re already taking care of yourself enough to be thinking about it (lots of people don’t do that) and to be looking for ways of figuring it out. So hopefully you can feel good about how you’re dealing with making the decision, even before you’ve made it.

If you have someone in your life you trust and you feel is safe to talk to, whose already been through the process, it could be great to reach out to them. There’s also some great places to find support and information online.

In that department, I can highly recommend two resources. First is the site Scarleteen. It’s wonderful, totally supportive, has some great articles on this very topic, and you should definitely check out the forums. Obviously its geared to teens, but also very welcoming to folks over 19. The site is at
http://www.scarleteen.com

The other is a great book called All the Way: Sex for the First Time. It’s written by a sexual health educator and a lot of it is devoted to helping you answer that question for yourself. Here’s a link to the book:
http://www.amazon.com/All-Way-Sex-First-Time/dp/1894549260/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1225773997&sr=1-2

Finally, if you want to email me at sexuality.guide@about.com I’d be happy to help if I can.
