If it’s Illegal to Sell Sex Toys, Are Sex Toys Illegal?

By January 31, 2008

Follow me on:

This headline caught my eye today:

Adult Store Caught Selling Illegal Sex Toys

My first thought was, what kind of sex toys are illegal? Are they sex toys with hidden knives and guns in them? Maybe they’re sex toys made out of cocaine. Without clicking on the link I couldn’t tell whether this was just another story about a local government’s pathetic attempt to control the sexuality of its citizens or a story about a legally sanctioned sex store that was selling a particular product that was illegal. I’m no grammarian, but I would argue that this the headline implies the latter not the former.

Unfortunately I’d be wrong.

The story isn’t even about a government or police crackdown on sex toy retailers, it’s about a VERY slow news day in Jackson, Mississippi and what I can only imagine is a very troubled “reporter”.

After hearing rumors that the “Adult Video and Books” boutique on McDowell Road, which had previously been busted for selling sex toys, was at it again, the intrepid Kandiss Crone from the 3 On Your Side “news” team decided to go undercover. Based on the secret audio recording, it sounds like she was confronted with a helpful sales person who sold her a vibrator (she chose “the purple one”). She then went back to confront an unimpressed but entirely pleasant store owner who tried to explain to Ms. Crone all the different places on your body you can use a vibrator (the one’s not prohibited by law in Mississippi).

You really have to watch the segment to believe it. I’ve watched it twice, and am left with several thoughts:

  1. I love that the store is wheelchair accessible. I live in a major city and 90% of the stores here aren’t. Bravo “Adult Video and Books”.
  2. How pathetic was it that they couldn’t even get the cops interested in the store? It seems like the “3 On Your Side” team are the only ones who care about this sex store selling sex toys. This begs raises the question; whose side are they on?
  3. The “reporter” chose a vibrator that matched her sweater. Coincidence?

Why is this called a “three-dimensional object”? What other kinds of objects would be sold in stores? This is one of the weirdest news “stories” ever!
And you _know_ she brought that toy home for herself, ha ha!

I was wondering about the three-dimensional part myself Amy. I’m sure there’s a legal explanation for it about distinguishing evil sex toys from benign object that Mississipi legislators already own (but never use on their genitals)!

Do we have a problem with a female reporter doing an piece on a law that subjugates women? No? Just another day in the south?

Is it just me, or is “Kandiss Crone” a pretty fantastic porn name?

I didn’t want to be the one who pointed that out, but the double “ss” is kind of a porn name staple.

Not to by any means justify the absolutely puritanical laws of my home state, but by “three-dimensional object” I think that they may be differentiating between actual sexual toys and videos or books about sex and/or involving use of said toys…

Not that that makes this story any less ridiculous. :sigh:

I just returned from a visit to Melbourne, Australia. A few years back, guns were banned (yes, violent crime has increased since then.) Also, the socialized health care system dictates which foods parents can send in a childs school lunch. However, my wife and I were able to visit “Sexyland” chain sex stores and purchase nice toys with a fine selection of lubricants. The service and advice was wonderful! Now, one might argue for healthier food for kids or the potential harm of a gun, but to deny the personal freedom to purchase a device that hurts no one (not even ones self) is total dictatorship.

Did anyone notice that it didn’t state anything about her giving the “personal vibrator” back to the store owner…….hmmmmmm I wonder if she is still using it? GET A LIFE Ms.Crone. Report some GOOD news. I am so sick of the media….and the fools that feed their frenzy by reading the garbage they print !!!

Sexual perversion or whatnot. Evidently you are allowed to consider sex toys a novelty, but not an actual sexual object. There are three states that say you could go to jail if caught. It’s kind of ridiculous. They send cops out to people to see if someone is going to be “perverted.” What century are we in? People are perverted without toys! Just let them play! There is some woman on trial right now b/c she had a sex toy party and someone got perrty offended.

actually i live in the 3 on your side area too and i find it rediculous beyond belief that you cant sell vibrators in mississippi even though several sex shops still sell them. i dont see why it would be illegal i saw this news report the day it came on the news. i didnt even know it was illegal untill i saw this..its not illegal to own one or buy one just to sell them. i think its stupid.

All I can say is, I’m glad I don’t live in Alabama, USA. This is just ludicrous…

By Jay Reeves, AP

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (July 29) – A federal appeals court Wednesday upheld a 1998 Alabama law banning the sale of sex toys in the state, ruling the Constitution doesn’t include a right to sexual privacy.

In a 2-1 decision overturning a lower court, a three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the state has a right to police the sale of devices that can be sexually stimulating.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which represented merchants and users who sued to overturn the law, asked the appeals court to rule that the Constitution included a right to sexual privacy that the ban on sex toy sales would violate. The court declined, indicating such a decision could lead down other paths.

It’s no illegal but i think it’s illegal in some eastern countries. I normally buy adult sex toys from adultsextoys.net.au where they ship worldwide!

(21) fullgrownchick says:

I live in MS and just to let you know “after dark toys” most of us use the real deal not the vibrating ones, so we don’t have ANY built up sexual tension! Lol! But I would like the choice to sell, own, or use any sexual toy available! We all know that people use some crazy stuff, including animals, during their sexual play. That’s more perverted than a vibrator, so do those people go to jail? I am glad that the police dept basically said that they had more important things to do than worry about sex toys!
I would hope so, since Jackson MS was named the 14th most dangerous city in the U.S. according to the same wlbt 3 people.

(23) Pestilence says:

OMG wtf? seriously? it’s illegal to sell vibrators? but it’s okay for them to have a sign on the way to jackson that was taken down not because of the nasty stripper on it, but because of the quote “strippers love to ride our poles”? yes, they put it back up with the words censored, but that’s not what should be censored. but it’s okay to have places where men and women can go to cheat on their spouses, but not where they can go to buy fun things together? hey, mississippi law commissioners, wake up and rethink your strategies! then again, why would they shut down things they themselves more than likely go to. hmmm.

So can you ship a sex toy to a friend in Mississippi or will you go to jail for that too?
