Federal Authorities Seize "Natural Supplement" Sexual Enhancers

Friday April 11, 2008

Over $100,000 worth of so-called "natural supplements" sold under the names Shangai Regular, Shangai Ultra, Super Shangai, Naturalė Super Plus, and Lady Shangai have been seized by U.S. Marshals. The products were found to contain active ingredients found in FDA-approved prescription drugs for Erectile Dysfunction, yet the ingredients were undeclared and the products had never been submitted for FDA approval (they were being sold as dietary supplements).

The seizure comes two years after the FDA issued a public warning about sexual enhancement drugs sold online and less than five months since the FDA advised the company that imports and distributes the product that they were in violation of the law and would face regulatory action.

Are FDA-approved active ingredients always not natural? Does their presence in a “natural product” always indicate inappropriate use of a man-made pharmaceutical product? Just curious.

These are good questions, but they expose a bigger problem I’ve always had, which is what on earth does “natural” mean? In the world of sex toys, lots of lube companies describe their product as “all natural” or the “most natural”. Sometimes they are talking about the percentage of their ingredients that are sourced from plants, other times they just use the word as a way of suggesting you won’t have a bad reaction to it. The idea that something that isn’t processed or manufactured is somehow safer because it isn’t, is ridiculous. There are plenty of things found in nature that are toxic, carcinogenic, and just plain annoying to our bodies. I didn’t get in touch with anyone from the FDA regarding this release, so I don’t know the answers to your questions.
