Groundbreaking Conference on Wounded Troops and Partners
This Wednesday the Center of Excellence for Sexual Health at the Morehouse School of Medicine is hosting a one-day conference bringing together elected officials, public and private agency leaders, health-care professionals, members of the armed services, veterans, and concerned civilians to raise awareness and document the connections between mental and physical disabilities (including PTSD, traumatic brain injury, and serious burns) and intimate relationships.
Speakers include former U.S. Surgeon Generals Dr. David Satcher and Dr. Richard Carmona, Bob Dole, Lee Woodruff, as well as current and former service members who have served in Vietnam and Iraq. The conference has also brought together physical and mental health professionals working on the front lines of post-combat sexual rehabilitation.
The conference is being held in Washington, DC at the Barbara Jordan Conference Center (in the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation's Public Affairs Center) which is going to allow the conference to be webcast live, and then archived online to be made available after the conference.
Issues around sexuality, intimacy, and disability are so rarely spoken about in public that I usually drop everything I have to to attend conferences like this one. Lucky for me I happen to be in DC, so I'm just going to have to get on public transit and I'll be there. I'll be reporting back after the conference, but if you're interested in more information, or are in DC and want to see if you could attend, contact information can be found through the conference website here.
