Sleeping Around Craigslist

Tuesday July 29, 2008

This article has been in my inbox all month and I’m happy I finally got around to reading it. Nothing more or less than its title suggests, it’s a first person account by two middle aged women about their experiences looking for people to have sex with on Craigslist.

I only wish they had devoted a little less space to detailing their sexual encounters and a bit more to digging deeper into their discovery that casual sex is anything but casual. Reading their account one begins to distinguish what they say they like about their sexual experiences via Craigslist; that there are no long term commitments made or implied by having sex -- and the packaged product they’re after; so called casual sex. I think if we use the term casual sex too much without defining it for ourselves and asking others how they define it, we can begin to confuse it with sex without connection or sex without meaning. I think having sex at least once where it really had no meaning or connection to another can be interesting or liberating, I don’t see how it would be anything other than dull the second time. It would be interesting to know how (and if) people who are looking for sex outside a committed relationship define casual sex for themselves and how often it comes up with the people they’re having sex with.
