Susie Bright Kindles

I was very excited to discover tonight that some of Susie Bright's books, and Susie Sexpert's Lesbian Sex World in particular, are now available for download to the Amazon Kindle. Lesbian Sex World was the first Susie Bright book I bought, and it's one of the books that changed my life.

I remember having to brace myself for the stares I got walking into the Toronto Women's bookstore, running out and taking it to work where I hid in the third floor offices and read the entire book cover to cover in one sitting. Not to put too fine a flakey point on it, but there was magic in that book for me.

I can't say how it worked exactly, but reading Susie's simple and hilarious observations of her own experience and the experience of the women around her gave me permission, and confidence, and more than anything else, it gave me hope. Hope that there was something more out there than a sexual world mired in identity politics and rigid gender roles. There was nothing like Susie Bright in my world at that time. There was straight and gay; there were swingers and cheaters; there were kinky people, but they wouldn't ever talk to you and always seemed serious and physically uncomfortable.

Susie's writing struck the same chord in me that Betty Dodson's Liberating Masturbation did when I snuck it off my mother’s bookshelf to read under the covers; and I'm convinced that I wouldn't be doing what I do today if it hadn't been for those books.

I'm not sure how my future children will sneak my electronic copy of Lesbian Sex World from my virtual bookshelf and read it in their bed pods, but I'm sure glad it'll it be there in whatever form for them to discover.
