There Once Was a Man From Uranus...
Stories about sex toy injuries can sound a lot like urban legends. You’ve probably heard a story about a story from someone who knew this person whose uncle had a thing happen with a sex toy. Maybe you clicked on a headline like ”Woman Injured in Sex Toy Power Tool Encounter” or “stumbled” across one of the many websites devoted to anal sex toy emergencies.
Anecdotally I can say that in my over twenty years of working in sex shops, I’ve had exactly two phone calls from distressed sex toy users who lost a toy inside themselves.
But until recently anecdotal and case study evidence is all we had to try and grasp the big picture of sex toy injuries. Thankfully two researchers from the University of Alabama (the same state that continues to ban the sale of sex toys) have conducted the first population-based study on sex toy injuries. They categorized injuries by type of toy and type of injury, and used a pre-existing consumer product tracking system in emergency rooms across the U.S.
They found that while incidents are relatively rare (at their peak in 2006 there were 5.46 injuries per million Americans) they are on the rise. And in most cases they are fully preventable, making this research well worth reading.
