Sexual Losses in 2012

By December 24, 2012

Follow me on:

Each year, at this time, I set aside several days to research and compile a list of people we lost this year whose lives and/or work was in some way oriented toward making the world a better place in terms of sexuality and gender. I started doing it because, with a few exceptions, people who devote parts of their lives to trying to make change in the area of sexuality and gender don't get a lot of public acknowledgement for their work.

It's no small thing to try and live your life not as what you're meant to be but as who you are and who you want to be. These people are remembered by their communities. But I'd like them to be known by more.

And so this list. It's stitched together by my own research and by friends and colleagues from around the world remembering people to me. Like every year, 2012 was a year where we lost many people to suicide. People who spent a lot of their time helping and supporting others who themselves live precarious lives. It's fucked up. But we need to remember it and the way one dies doesn't and shouldn't be the sole frame of how one is remembered, so I hope you'll take a few minutes to look through this years list and remember some people you may have known or known of, and learn about a few people you didn't.
