Sex Positions from the Inside Out

By October 14, 2013

Follow me on:

With Halloween around the corner I realize the image to the right may seem a bit macabre. It's not meant to be. This is a sex position.

It's one of several images produced as part of an innovative study, a collaboration between medical researchers and digital imaging specialists who wanted to know more about how we move when we have sex.

Specifically they wanted to know about movement during intercourse, and even more specifically about how our hips move, so as to offer advice on what sex positions are best for people who have had total hip arthroplasty (aka hip replacement surgery).

The people behind the study made this illustrative and easy to understand video describing their goals, methods, and outcomes.

As you may have gathered from the oddly gendered pink and blue skeletons, the research was done in the context of heterosexual intercourse. But in an email correspondence the lead author, Dr. Caecilia Charbonnier, confirmed that the positions are valid for couples of any gender, the colors can be understood to denote who is doing what during intercourse.

In researching a longer piece about sex positions post hip replacement surgery I wasn't surprised to find that so few surgeons talk about sex with their patients. But I was a little surprised to learn that this is the first study to carefully consider the mechanics of sexual intercourse in order to offer more than a best guess answer to the question of what positions are going to be best.

Watching the dancing bones in the video may be a bit unsettling at first, but it's worth having a look and by the end of the three minutes if you're like me you'll be hoping this is only a glimpse of what's to come.

The true essence of a good sex

what a great article. sex is definitely an art, leaving the manifesto that sex should become a rite of pleasure with your partner. The video I found very interesting because the hip movement plays a key role to achieve greater intercourse

this is what my art is about too, what does the naked body looks like in motion during sexual intercourse, i started the painting orgy as i am curious to know what happens to the naked body when having sex, do the skin tones changes and where does the light lands and on which parts of the naked body, so i watched 100′s of porn videos and painted the couple having sex on to a 48x60inch canvas in acrylic and i was short-listed and my art was hung in the gallery in Cork street, my art title is called forbidden fruit …… i went further by changing the colours of the naked bodies from black to white and from white to black, creating for the viewer an abstract, , you can find me on many on-line outlets and on fb
