The primary function of a dildo is to facilitate penetration play. Dildos may be used for vaginal penetration , anal penetration, and in the case of some double dildos, both. Unlike vibrators that move once turned on, a dildo only does what you make it do, making them a great way to get comfortable and feel in control when having penetration. While shape and size may be the most important consideration when choosing a dildo, the primary quality difference relates to the dildo material.

Dildos also can be categorized by function. Dildos with a wide, flared base are safe for anal penetration and most may be used in strap ons. Some dildos are curved for g spot stimulation. And there are dildos with two ends designed for double penetration.

Dildos made from 100% silicone have become the most popular choice of customers at better quality sex shops. They are long lasting, soft, flexible and easy to clean. Other natural materials like metal, glass, and in some cases wood have the benefit of being less likely to cause allergic reactions or to absorb fluids. It is always recommended that people use condoms on plain rubber dildos as they are porous, difficult to clean, and if they contain phthalates they could conceivably pose a health risk.

When looking for your first dildo, size and shape are important to consider and if you’re on a budget you may want to start with a less expensive dildo. Don’t worry about getting something too long (you don’t need to use the whole length) but avoid a dildo that’s too wide. If you are looking for a dildo to use in a strap on, be sure it has a flared base, is firm, and is a few inches longer than the length you want. Always make sure you know what the material is and how best to keep it clean.
