Study Sheds New Light on Common STD

Wednesday January 4, 2006
An Australian study to be published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases this February points to oral sex as a risk factor for nongonococcal urethritis (NGU), one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases affecting both men and women. The complete journal article is available online.

The study is important in part because it further teases out many of the unknowns (both cause and the transmission) of this very common sexually transmitted infection, including the role of oral sex in transmission of NGU.

In an accompanying editorial, H. Hunter Handsfield, MD, of the Battelle Center for Public Health Research and Evaluation and the University of Washington, called the landmark Melbourne study "a good interim step" whose findings "significantly advance the field," but points out that many important questions remain yet to be answered.
