Sex with Robots
Imagine a robot that looks, sounds, smells, and feels exactly like your former, current, or dream-about-in-the-future, lover.
Imagine that this robot has access to the instruction from every sex manual, sex column, and infomercial website that has ever been produced, and can synthesize this data into concrete action and sexual behavior.
Imagine this robot has software that continually evolves, becoming a more attentive lover, a more appealing partner, changing it’s voice, appearance, and behavior based on how you interact with it, all the while using fewer and fewer resources to achieve this goal.
Imagine this robot can reproduce (with or without your help).
Whether this sounds like heaven, hell, purgatory, or some completely non-religious place, this is a reality that isn’t too far in the future according to David Levy.
Levy, who has worked in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) since 1967, is the author of Robots Unlimited: Life in a Virtual Age. His book offers a detailed and engaging history of AI, cataloguing the research that has been done, and new directions already being explored. He also raises fundamental questions about the future of AI and human sexuality, particularly the role of “sexbots” in human sexual interactions. From sexbots as sex educators, to sexbots as permanent sexual partners, Levy’s ideas are challenging (and may seem far fetched) but his research is meticulous, and his tone is never glib.
