Making Money Off Sex (Quietly)

By November 6, 2006

Follow me on:

I've always maintained that while porn will never be completely mainstream, sex toys are heading for the shelves of Wal-Mart sometime soon. SSL, the parent company that owns Durex caused a stir (and a financial boom for shareholders) last year when they got their new line of vibrators in pharmacies in the UK, and popular drug store chains in Canada.

The climb to the top continues with the introduction of Kama Sutra products to Duane Read drugstores in Manhattan. The Kama Sutra line, which offer high end packaging on “sensual” products like edible warming oils, scented and flavored talcs, and a line of lubricants, have been one of the only brand names in sex stores for years.

This is hardly the first time a drug store or non-adult store has carried flavored lotions, but the size of Duane Reade must be attracting attention.

This isn't yet an example of the complete integration of sex toys into mainstream culture, as is evidenced by Duane Reade's corporate silence on the new product lines. All the press about this has been generated by the Kama Sutra company and not Duane Reade, whose spokespeople refused to comment in the press.

I am a sex worker. I think prostitution should be legalized. It’s a victimless crime. I’ve never felt like a victim in all the time I’ve been doing this. The money is good and, believe it or not, I’ve met some really good guys…..

The link at the bottom of the this story does not work. That being said I know that Walgreens carries a few items, but not many. I guess there massagers could be put to use in a vibrator sort of way. Walgreens sells a vibrating cock ring in my area.

Just wanted to add that massage devices at Walgreens are not meant for insertion if anyone has ideas towards trying this. And, yes I meant to say their not there in referring to Walgreens. Oh, and yes I do agree with the legalization of prostitution and marijuana.

I agree with you all, the state and government has too much control over “people” in general. Prostitution should be legal. if an adult wants to sell or pay for sex then so be it. Its not crack! (per say)

(16) Emily says:

It is only a “victim-less crime” when you are not being taken advantage of which is something that I understand a great deal of women who sell sex for money seem to not comprehend when it comes to themselves. I’ve met very few women who have been prostitutes who are self assured, sexually or otherwise or even healthy mentally or spiritually. They seem to live under a sheet of massive denial that is supported by other women in the “trade” that uplifts them into a cloud under this sheet and makes them claim to be able to handle it. Prostitution is not glamorous – it is unhealthy, unwise and usually unfair. Trading sex for money causes a degradation of the body and spirit of the person selling themselves. Mind you, I am not a religious person, but I am against sex for money because it’s not a fair trade of “services” for one. The sex is risky because of communicable diseases and women are vulnerable to pregnancy no matter how you slice it. Morally it is reprehensible to read these quips by women who no matter what I say will defend their “right” to legalize something which is in fact, so demoralizing!
Also, if you legalize it you are taking on the possibility that women can be abused legally- you are setting the stage for crimes against women to be committed legally and isn’t it bad enough that rapists sometimes walk away free and clear to do it again and again? Put the legalization thing in court and you have a whole ballgame which will further exonerate really awful criminals who abuse woman sexually! What the heck is the matter with you ladies? Sex can be great between two people for a long time! If you are not getting sex you need there are swingers clubs- no money needs to exchange hands! Money is NOT fair trade for sex! Never will be! Never has been! Amen!

(17) David says:

Why does the government say you have to get paid $7.75 an hour when you work at Wal-Mart? It is my body and my time. I should be able to do whatever the f I want. Minimum wage laws are ridiculous and so are laws banning prostitution in my opinion.

(19) Randy says:

Prostitution should be legal. America is behind with the times, but I think the reason why prostitution is illegal is because the government is unable to get their “fair” taxes out of these cash deals! The government can continue to “screw” us over when it comes to money, but how dare anybody else get thrown a bone. So, let’s make prostitution legal and allow people to decide what to do with their own bodies!!

(22) Steff says:

Having sex for money is a bad idea in some ways. I understand that women are entitled to do what they want with their bodies, However, controlling STI’s will become more and more difficult, since someone who wants to have sex and are willing to pay for it are unlikely to say ‘Oh, By the way, I have an STI’.
If it were to be incorporated into a business where regular health checks were made and the customers were cleared of having an STI before having sex, then it would be OK, but at the moment, i think it’s a bad idea.

(23) Becky Ytread says:

Well I don’t think there is anything wrong with prostitution. If a woman wants to make money doing what she loves, how should that be illegal. I mean the founding fathers created this nation for freedom to make a living doing what you choose. And if sex with a prostitute can keep a man busy instead of trying to get it from young girls, than no there should not be anything wrong with it. Plus I need a little extra cash right now so it would be helpful to legalize it.
