Getting Hot and Bothered Over God's Law

Thursday March 15, 2007

In case you haven't heard of this project, David Plotz has been methodically blogging his way through the Bible, for Slate.com. On Tuesday he hit Psalm 119, which has the dual distinction of being both the longest psalm in the longest chapter in the Bible, and, in Plotz's words, a love poem to God's law (a surprisingly intense love poem in parts). What I love about reading this series is how it makes you want to go back to the original text, from Tuesday's blog posting:

A love poem to God's laws—a steamy, Last Tango in Paris, sweat-soaked ode to all God's commandments, decrees, laws, and rules. Imagine Supreme Court Justice David Souter getting crazy in love, and you get some idea of this psalm. (Question for God-fearing lawyers out there—is this a favorite psalm of yours?)

let me state right of i’m bias. i was raised in a home and school where i was beaten over the head and shoulders with the bible. now at 50 years of age i still suffer with ptsd whenever the bible comes up. the lessions i learned from the bible is hate and fear to authority. that has made my life alot harder then it ever needed to be! this psalm does not surpise me at all! judism, christianty, and islam all find the world ugly thus, they have made the world ugly. these religions are builted on the hate of all things human. whomever wrote that psalm was highly repressed sexuality and could not act too well on their sexuality with other people. that poor guy (or gal) had some really big time mental health issues going on! i know this is not a fair review to cast over all christians, jews, and moslems. alot if not most of them do truly love and treat others with dignity where their religion’s are concerned. however, as i stated i grew up with a religion of indignity; i’m still fighting at overcoming it’s influnce on me. if i have offened anyone i do apologize, i just thought my story would act as a waring of the dangers of a negative upbringing in a religion rather, then a postive one.
