A Stranger Porn Valley Story
It's been almost three years since Susannah Breslin returned to her popular blog The Reverse Cowgirl. I had been a casual reader of the blog in its first incarnation, but once she came back I committed myself and with few exceptions read everything Breslin writes on line. Even though she has published in print far too little and blogged probably too much, I identify Breslin primarily as an author and not a blogger (and if this were a different sort of blog I’d take the time to explain the distinction).
A strange thing about reading an author's blog is that you can begin to think you know something about them. I imagine the process is something like what happens with actors whose fans identify them with a particular character, only I suspect everything is muddier with authors and blogging than it is with actors and performing. Anyway, after reading Breslin's work for many years I always remind myself that I don't in fact know anything about her, but what I do know is that she's a very good writer. Although, perhaps ironically for both of us, I sometimes wish she'd stop writing about pornography. In the same way that that most (but not all) porn obscures everything interesting and erotic about human sexual behavior, in Breslin's writings porn often gets in the way of the lushest and darkest parts of the text.
I’ve been thinking about these things recently because Breslin has started publishing more of her writing on her blog. Last week she published A Porn Valley Story, and yesterday she began what I hope is the process of talking about her novel Happy.
Whether you go for the hideous and beautiful images or for the twisted words, I highly recommend regular visits to the Reverse Cowgirl. It makes thinking about sex something else, which is a good thing.
